Texas Lutheran Takes 1-0 Series Lead
Release Date: 04/24/2009
Seguin, Texas-Texas Lutheran starting pitcher Brad Orosey struck out six and scattered three hits over seven innings to lead the Bulldogs to a 10-1 game one win over the Eagles in the first round of the American Southwest Conference playoffs in Seguin, Texas.
The series will continue tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. Game three, if necessary, will begin 30 minutes following game one.
The Eagles (17-24) nearly chased Orosey out of the game early when they collected back-to-back singles by Jeremy Hogan and Cory Briggs with two outs in the first. However, the freshman right-hander ended Ozarks’ hopes with a strike out. Bruce Cameron and Rusty Cordell drew back-to-back walks to open the second. With two outs, Andrew Teaster patiently drew another walk to load the bases. Logan Kizer then recorded an RBI with the fourth walk of the frame to tie the game 1-1. With activity in the Bulldog bullpen, Orosey got Hogan to hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Kizer out at second. Orosey then settled in and allowed just one hit the rest of the way.
Ozarks' starter Jonathan Cox held the Bulldog bats in check early on, limiting them to five hits through four. Cox ran into trouble in the fifth behind a rough defensive showing by the Eagles. The Bulldogs (29-12) took advantage of three errors in the frame, plating two runs to increase their lead to 4-1. The Bulldogs later added three runs in the sixth to pad their advantage to 7-1. They put three more on the board in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Cox, making his third start of the season, went five and one-third innings, scattered nine hits and fanned two. He fell to 0-1 on the year.
Orosey moved to 10-1 on the season.
Ozarks ended with five hits, all of which came from different players.
